Summer Gardening Tips

Check out these awesome summer gardening tips to keep your yard looking like a magazine. You can learn how to make this year’s garden the best one yet! Don’t let the summertime heat wear you down. With these great tips, your beautiful garden will be the talk of the town.

Be On the Look Out for Pests

Be on guard for pest who want to eat your plants for an afternoon snack! Keep garden tools with wooden handles, hardwood stakes and other timber products off the ground and away from moisture. Make sure to avoid spreading woodchip any closer than 1m away from your house or timber sheds. Keep all soil dry to help divert pests from being attracted to your garden. Watch out for untreated timber, like benches and garden bed edging, because they can decay quickly in the summertime heat.

Manage Your Gardening Time Wisely

It might seem impossible to do everything you want to do in the garden in the amount of time you want to do it in. If you are struggling to find the time, try spreading some fresh mulch, a few purposefully placed flowering plants and give your lawn a new cut to create a finished feel. When you have some time to spare, try putting down granular fertilizers (such as poultry manure) on the soil and cover it with mulch. Apart from keeping the soil cool and conserving water, mulch stops storm water from washing fertilizer away. If you have plants growing among several trees, try using a foliar feed to help absorb the nutrients more directly, and protect them from hungry tree roots!

Help Your Plants Stay Cool

Potted plants are extremely vulnerable to overheating, especially in the summertime. If possible, position them out of direct sunshine at all times. Keep in mind that standing potted plants in saucers of water are more likely to develop root rot and encourage mosquito breeding. Try filling your saucers filled with sand, but be sure to keep the sand moist. This guarantees that they roots stay cool and plants remain healthy.

Make Sure to the Keep Water Flowing

Check to make sure that your hoses and irrigation systems are completely free of leaks, and unblock all the nozzles. Clean out all debris from your gutters so that every time it rains, extra water goes straight to your garden!
